Kata Containers is an open source project and community working to build a standard implementation of lightweight Virtual Machines (VMs) that feel and perform like containers, but provide the workload isolation and security advantages of VMs.

Kata Containers combines technology from Clear Containers and Hyper runV. The code is hosted on Github under the Apache 2 license and the project is managed by the OpenStack Foundation.  Current members of the project include: Intel, Hyper.sh, Arm, Google, Microsoft, Tencent, CoreOS and many others.

Kata Containers has been accepted into the Works on Arm cluster, and work is underway to port the various components to arm64. A recent release is version 1.3 as of September 27, 2018.
